Hello Friends, dX Live Subscribers and Supporters,
We’re so excited that you’re a part of the dX family and what we’re creating!
Way back when (feels like a lifetime ago and yet only 7 months) my fellow dX co-founders and I started drawingXpressions, we started with a few key principles:
Make art and creative writing (education and community) available to everyone, regardless of income level or ability to pay,
Allow each person to pay what they feel is fair and affordable,
Create a space that not only supports the creative process but also the wholistic benefits of creating, and
Support every artist in their creative journey, be they instructor, customer, YouTube video peruser, or even absolute stranger.
We are, in essence, a for-profit company with non-profit ideas and ideals, looking to compensate our instructors not just fairly but equitably for the content they provide. We are passionate creators, sharers, and educators and have built dX to be a home for all creatives.
However, we find ourselves at a crossroads. We had hoped the “Build It And They Will Come” methodology would work, or at least would work better than it has. Currently, subscription income only covers 30% of what we pay instructors (and if we could, we’d be paying them a lot more! They definitely earn it with every class they produce here!), let alone all the other expenses that are part of being an online company.
Unfortunately, the funding to compensate our instructors is coming to an end and so… in essence… the dX Live portion (Live classes and recordings of those classes) will have to close if we are unable to attract more subscribers who are paying at higher rates. As much as we’d like to run solely on our collective enthusiasm for live and recorded classes from world-class instructors, we need to pay them monetarily (landlords don’t accept enthusiasm, class art, or talent as valid payment methods!).
And so we’re turning to you, the current subscribers of dX Live and dX Recordings and members in general. Some of you have been here since the beginning and others are new, but to all of you we are asking the same thing - please help us keep the live and recorded classes portion of dX alive. (And what we’d really like is to have sufficient income to bring in more world-class instructors!)
