Introducing a new columnist
We’re pleased to introduce a new columnist to dX exPress - Great Aunt Pam! Her first column with us is a self-introduction:
Just the other day I was doing my weekly grocery shop and I struck up a conversation with Steven, the stock boy (lovely lad, always helps load those big bags of flour and sugar into my car) and he asked me, he said if I’d been aware of what was happening on the other side of the wood from my house. I said no, but that I was now keen interested in what he had to say. So he said that someone had come in and set the property up to act as a kind of retreat location. So I asked him why anyone would need to retreat and where they were retreating from and he said that no, it was more of a place where people of like mind could come together, and I said that didn’t sound like a retreat at all. Sounds more like a “gather” to me.
Anyway, he helped me to understand that not only was a retreat centre opening up, they were set to have an Open House at some point! (Although why it’d be an Open House and not an Open Retreat Gather does mystify me).
I must admit that while I’m not at all sure of what will be going on there, I am a bit keen on visiting the open house at the retreat - the house does get quiet some nights despite Raisin’s (my cat, sweet thing, very purry, very cuddly) attempts to keep me company. My niece (lovely lady down the street, does something with computers I think) asked me if I’d write about my experience when I go visit (as something of an “every woman kind of thing”) and since I was already planning on going, I agreed. And then she said I should write some sort of introduction of myself and I guess that’s what this is.
And oh dear me - I just realized I never gave my name! I guess between the nervousness of writing this down and the excitement of doing something new caused me to completely forget my head!
Folks around here call me Great Aunt Pam and I like to say that while I may not be your Great Aunt, I am a great aunt. Or at least I’d like to think that I am! Anyway, I consider most people here to be family and keeping with the spirit of what they call me, I call them my nieces and nephews.
So I’m pleased to make your acquaintance and hope you’ll find the relating of my visit to be of interest.
And my niece, in order to put a face to a name, she asked if I had anything I could submit along with this introduction and so I showed her this delightful picture my nephew (lovely boy although he frightens me something awful when he tries to reach the sky on the swing set) drew of me and hangs on my refrigerator. It may not be a photo likeness but I think, as any proud Great Aunt would think, it’s the spitting image of me.
Until next time,
Your Great Aunt Pam
